Abstract
From the Introduction: "It is very pleasant to ride one's hobbyhorse into the byways. To an opera lover, the next best thing to hearing an opera is to talk bout it. Such a conversation, to be held with kindred souls, ranges, as this book does, from the operas themselves, their composers, the dramatic material they used, the social background of their work, to the merits, or, even more interesting, the demerits, of certain singers. The next best thing to personal discussion is reading about opera. It is to be hoped that the contents of this anthology may, in turn, stimulate new discussion and eventually lead to deeper understanding of the operatic art.
